1 MAN, 1 BIKE, 4 DECADES, 100KM: Inside Sporting Life's in-store Fundraiser

A RIDE THROUGH THE DECADES

This month, YYC Cycle has partnered with Sporting Life Market Mall to bring you A Ride Through the Decades. An incredible four-hour live ride featuring Calgary’s own, Jason Simmons.

An avid cyclist and bike racer for the last 20 years, Jason Simmons, Manager of Sporting Life, came up with the idea to ride 100km on his stationary bike at an in-store event to raise money for the Sporting Life 10k in support of Starlight Children’s Foundation.

“I didn’t want to do the run again but I wanted to do something because it is a great foundation that we are raising money for” Jason says.

The Starlight Children’s Foundation brightens the lives of seriously ill children and their families. Offering programs and events that provide the whole family with an escape from the stress of dealing with a serious illness.

Jason will be kicking off this years fundraising initiatives for the 10K run with his ambitious cycling endeavor, riding down a virtual track to YYC Cycle playlists of music from the 80’s, 90’s, 2000’s and 2010’s. The event will also feature a ‘cycling photobooth’, free snacks and the chance win amazing prizes including gift cards, gift baskets and a one-month pass to YYC Cycle!

Jason’s ride will not only be raising awareness for the upcoming 10K run but also fundraising for Starlight with a donation page set up as if he were running and in person donations during the event.“It’s kind of doing a whole bunch of things” Jason says, “raising awareness about the run, what we do, and ultimately raising money for starlight. The more people we can get running the more money we can raise.”

Jason has picked no easy feat for himself on this 100km ride, though he may be forgoing the run he has picked just as difficult of a challenge to raise money for Starlight Children’s Foundation.

“When you are riding a stationary trainer it’s a little bit different, you can’t stop, you always have to have that power on. There’s no coasting, there’s no other drafting behind other people to save energy. You can’t hide, it’s just you and your bike.” Jason says, “so it’s going to be difficult, there’s definitely going to be some moments where my brain’s going to say ‘what are you doing to me?’ but I think having everybody around and excited about the event and the music and everything, I’ll go numb, keep pushing and make it happen.”
